WHALES

Whale were very common during the middle Miocene but they were much smaller than those that live today. Bones of dolphins, baleen whales, and sperm whales are abundant in the Sharktooth Hill fauna. The ocean waters were believed to be warmer and the whales probably used the area as a calving location. A large number of juvenile cetacean bones are found in the Sharktooth Hill fauna. Some interesting facts; Sperm whales only have teeth on their lower jaw and fed on squid at great depths. Most toothed whales have asymmetrical skulls. The largest animal that has ever lived on the planet lives today. Do you know what it is? It is the blue whale. They can grow to 110' and weight 190 tons, but on the average it is much smaller. A blue whale can eat 4 tons of krill a day.
