Rhino Skull

Rhinos are represented in the Sharktooth hill fauna. Teleociras sp had short stumpy legs. It is believed that it's habits were similar to the hippopotamus, preferring to float their heavy bodies in streams and lakes, and waddling on land only to browse for food. The male Teloceras carried a short conical horn on his nose probably for defense and display during mating season. The specimen below is from Nevada, collected by Bruno Benson of Ojai. Rhinos were not the only land animal found in the Sharktooth Hill bone bed. Horses, camels, elephants and Tapirs are just a few of the land animals found in the bone bed.
