![]() MORTARS AND PESTLES Although the Yokuts hunted extensively, their main staple was the acorn. Like many other Valley tribes, they cultivated oak trees that produced superior acorns, and were in large part responsible for California's distinctive landscape of rolling golden hills dotted with oak groves. After hulling, the nuts were ground using mortars and pestles and the flour was treated to remove the bitter tannins. these mortars come in two types smaller portable mortars and large boulder slabs with numerous mortar holes sometimes called gossip rocks.
