Ichthyosaurs In Kern County
The oldest fossil found in Kern County dates back 220 million years (MY) to the middle Triassic Period, Ladinian Age times when the all of California was sea bottom with perhaps a few islands dotting the tropical sea surface

The ancient Paleocene swamps of what was to become Kern County, was the stomping ground of the horse ancestor, Tetraclaenodon puercensis

Dugongs
The fossil history of the Dugong is not well known. However, it is thought to share a common ancestry with the elephants along with such aquatic animals as the now extinct, Desmostylus, and Paleoparadoxia.

The sea lion ancestor Allodesmus thrived in the Miocene bay that covered what is now Bakersfield CA.
